The AOSIS Chair is pleased to announce the tenth year of the AOSIS Fellowship Programme. The Fellowship Programme is an opportunity for young professionals from AOSIS countries to get hands-on training on relevant law, policy, and science issues and build enduring capacity in AOSIS member governments to engage on climate change, oceans, and sustainable development. In 2024, the Fellowship Programme will train a new class of ten Fellows in climate change, oceans, environmental protection, sustainable development issues, and the international process. With the consent of their respective Head of Mission, Fellows will work from their home country’s New York Mission and will work both on national and AOSIS priorities. The attached concept note provides more information about the Fellowship Programme and the criteria for candidates.
The deadline to submit an application is Friday, December 8, 2023. Please submit your application to the Department of Foreign Affairs for selection. The FSM Mission will send the selected candidate’s application form, cover letter, CV, and writing sample to fellowship@aosis.org to apply. In submitting an application, we ask for a commitment that the Fellow will have a position in government when they return home. Please note priority will be given to candidates from those missions that have not yet hosted an AOSIS Fellow. The new class of Fellows will begin in February 2024 in New York, and a decision on which applicants are selected to participate in the fellowship is expected to be made by the AOSIS Bureau by late December.
The candidate must:
1. Be a national of an AOSIS country;
2. Be 25 to 32 years old at the beginning of the Fellowship Programme;
3. Hold a degree in a relevant field (international relations, international law, environment, climate change,
sustainable development, fisheries, ocean affairs, finance, etc.);
4. Have 1 to 3 years of experience (maximum 5 years) working in a national government, or a regional or
international organization.
5. Commit to work in their national government following the completion of the Fellowship;
6. Demonstrate discretion and sound judgment in dealing with politically sensitive issues in a diplomatic
environment;
7. Demonstrate excellent academic record and writing skills; and
8. Be proficient in written and spoken English.
