Canada Requested FSM Support for UN Security Council Seat
PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Information Service): May 6, 1998 – Canadian Special
Envoy Royce Firth and New Zealand Ambassador to the FSM John
Mills, paid a courtesy call on President Jacob Nena first week
of April. They were seeking FSM’s support for their non-permanent
seat to the United Nations Security Council, according to a Communication
from the Deputy Secretary of Department of Foreign Affairs.
Canada has put forth its candidacy for a non-permanent seat
on the Security Council for the term 1999-2000 which will be
voted on during the 53rd UN General Assembly. Other members interested
in the two slots are the Netherlands and Greece.
FSM UN Permanent Representative will be called upon to cast
its vote on the candidate of its choice. It was for this reason
that the Canadian Special Envoy made a personal visit to personally
seek support from the FSM President and the FSM UN Mission.
An Aide-Memoir stated that the Government of Canada would
greatly appreciate the esteemed and valuable support of the FSM
Government for Canada’s candidacy for election to the Security
Council.
