FSM signs diplomatic relations with Mexico

NEW YORK, 27 September 2001: The Government of the Federated States of Micronesia and the Government of Mexico consummated diplomatic relations by the signing of a Joint Communique by the two countries Permanent Representatives in a brief ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of Mexico to the United Nations in New York.
The Joint Communique, signed on 27 September 2001 by FSM Ambassador Masao Nakayama and Mexican Ambassador Jorge Eduardo Navarrete on behalf of their respective governments stated in part the two government’s “commitment to carry on joint efforts to develop ties between their peoples in the bilateral and multilateral scopes”.
Staff of the two Permanent Missions including Mr. Jeem Lippwe and Mr. Martin Zvachula of the Mission of Micronesia, witnessed the ceremony.

Mexico is an active member of the United Nations since 1945, and in terms of the regional grouping at the United Nations, belongs to GRULAC (Group of Latin American and Caribbean States), one of the five UN regional groupings.
Mexico joins three other GRULAC countries – namely Peru, Guatemala and Argentina with diplomatic relations with the FSM.

In March 2002, Mexico will host the United Nations International Conference on Financing for Development which purpose is to allow for an in-depth examination of the key development issues within the context of globalization.
