FSM signs MOU with Australia on Tsunami Warning System and Climate Monitoring System

Palikir, Pohnpei (FSM Information Services): March 31, 2009 – On March 25, 2009, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the Tsunami Warning System & Climate Monitoring System sponsored by the Australian Government was signed between the FSM Government and the Government of Australia in a brief ceremony held at the FSM Department of Foreign Affairs. The Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Lorin S. Robert signed the MOU on behalf of the FSM Government and Ambassador Susan Cox on behalf of the Australian Government.

The FSM Weather Service Station and Geosciences Australia and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology are the designated implementing agencies for the project. The main objectives of the MOU are to provide a sustainable network of accurate sea level monitoring stations to collect, analyze, and disseminate high quality sea level data in the Pacific region to provide advance warning of tsunamis and the effects of climate change.
