FSM Signs Two Optional Protocols to the Convention on the Rights of the Child

New York (FSM Permanent Mission to the UN): May 9, 2002 –
Ambassador Masao Nakayama, Permanent Representative of the Federated States of Micronesia to the United Nations, yesterday signed two optional protocols to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and FSM became the 103^rd signatory of the optional protocol “on the involvement of children in armed conflict” and the 98^th signatory of the protocol “on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography”. Both optional protocols went into force in early 2002.

The signing took place at a brief ceremony in the United Nations with the Chief of the United Nations Treaty Section Mr. Palitha T. B. Kohona present. Also in attendance were several officials from UNICEF and Mr. Martin Zvachula, staff member of the FSM Permanent Mission to the United Nations and official United Nations photographers.

The signing of the two optional protocols precedes the statement of Mrs. Iris G. Falcam, First Lady of the Federated States of Micronesia, who is scheduled to address the 27^th Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly on Children today, 9 May 2002.
