Micronesia and Finland establish diplomatic relations

New York (FSM Permanent Mission to the United Nations): May 4, 2010 – The Permanent Mission of the Federated States of Micronesia to the United Nations is pleased to announce that today, 4 May 2010, the Governments of the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Finland have formally established diplomatic relations through the signing of a Joint Communiqué in New York by the two nations Permanent Representatives to the United Nations, H.E. Ambassador Masao Nakayama and H.E. Ambassador Jarmo Viinanen.

The Joint Communiqué states that the two nations desire to promote mutual understanding and consolidate relations of friendship and cooperation between their peoples. The two nations agreed that their relations are guided by the principles and objectives of the Charter of the United Nations. The two nations further agreed that their diplomatic and consular relations shall be based on the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 1963.

Finland became the 61^st country to establish diplomatic relations with the FSM.
