Micronesia and Uruguay Establish Diplomatic Relations

New York (FSM Permanent Mission to the United Nations): September 5, 2013 – The Federated States of Micronesia and the Oriental Republic of Uruguay on Thursday signed a joint communiqué for the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The signing ceremony, which took place at the Permanent Mission of Uruguay to the United Nations in New York, was officiated by the Federated States of Micronesia’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Her Excellency Jane J. Chigiyal and her counterpart from the Permanent Mission of Uruguay, His. Excellency Jose Luis Cancela.

Both countries agreed to establish diplomatic relations at the Ambassadorial level, and to be guided by the principles enunciated in the Charter of the United Nations, international law and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations dated 18 April 1961.

In the ensuing discussions after the ceremony, the two envoys expressed their eagerness to develop mutually beneficial bilateral relations in the political and economic areas and other cooperation aspects.

The Oriental Republic of Uruguay becomes the sixty-eight country with which the FSM has established diplomatic relations with and the eight from the Central and South American region.
