PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Information Service): December 2,
1997 – President Jacob Nena, on November 26, 1997, made a
declaration saying that Chuuk State is in a state of disaster as a
result of a November 4, 1997, fire that totally destroyed the
building that housed the Chuuk Department of Public Safety Office and
the State Jail.
Also destroyed were all records, office machines and equipment,
furniture and fixtures, rifles, pistols and ammunition, flags,
radios, seized contraband and other personal property in the
building.
Inmates are not in State Jail cells and the entire department is
without a suitable workplace but in temporary shelters, the
declaration stated.
To remedy this problem, President Nena has authorized expenditure
of funds from Disaster Relief Fund for purchase of necessary food,
clothing, shelter, medical supplies, debris clearance, and repair of
damaged property and such other matters to be determined from time to
time as necessary by the President.
