Palau hosts 2^nd meeting of the Micronesian Presidents

PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Information Service): August 1, 2002 – The 2^nd meeting of the Micronesian Presidents is in Palau this week where the Heads of Governments are meeting to further the forum established last for discussions on issues of mutual interest to the region, especially concerning three nations.

The three Presidents: Leo A. Falcam – President of the Federated States of Micronesia, Kessai H. Note – President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and Tommy E. Remengesau Jr. – President of the Republic of Palau are expected to update on some of last year’s issues in FSM which ranged from the ongoing Compact Re-negotiations to Quarantine Standardization to issues of telecommunication capacities.

The Heads of Government are expected to discuss during this summit the following issues:

• the recent ACP Summit;
• the upcoming World Summit on Sustainable Development;
• climate hange;
• trade;
• whaling commission, and;
• the water forum in Palau.

The Presidents’ expect to wrap up their meeting on Friday – August 02, 2002.
