Preparations for the Compact Negotiation on the Way

PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Information Service): July 9, 1997
President Jacob Nena today, July 9, 1997, signed into law,
Congressional Act 10-10, designating it P.L. 10-11. The law
establishes the Joint Committee on Compact Economic Negotiations and
its Secretariat for the purpose of coordinating the nation’s
preparation efforts towards effectively renegotiating the Compact of
Free Association with the United States of America.

President Nena, after signing the act into law emphasized that
since it is a rather urgent matter, he need responses from the States
and Congress, so that the Committee can be organized and proceed to
the preparations for the Compact Negotiation. With this bill
becoming law, the President urged all the Governors and State
Legislatures nominate their representatives as early as possible.

Witnessing the signing of the law were Vice President Leo A.
Falcam, Emilio Musrasrik, from the Attorney General’s Office, Lorin
Robert, Department of External Affairs and other staff at the Office
of the President.
