 Technical scholarships offeredPOHNPEI, Palikir (FSM Information Service): September 2000 – The Japanese government has announced the offering of graduate scholarships to study at Japanese universities as research students in certain technical fields currently within the Japan-FSM Cooperation. The fields of from the humanities and social sciences include literature, history, aesthetics, law, politics, economics, commerce, pedagogy, psychology, sociology, music, and fine arts. In the natural sciences, the fields of study include pure science, engineering, agriculture, fisheries, pharmacology, medicine, dentistry, and home economics, according to a bulletin from the Japanese Embassy in Kolonia Town, Pohnpei. To qualify for a scholarship, applicants must be from the FSM, under 35 years old as of April 1, 2001, be a college or university graduate, must be willing to study Japanese and receive instruction in Japanese, and be able to arrive in Japan between the April 1 and April 7, 2001, or between October 1 and 7, 2001. Applicants entering the Ph.D. program must have completed 16 years of school education. Applicants can choose between two categories: a two-year term that would run from April 2001 to March 2003 and a one and a half year term from October 2001 to March 2003, both terms are for those who wish to study as non-degree students. Both categories shall normally include six months for the study of the Japanese language for those whose knowledge of the language is insufficient to pursue their studies, according to the bulletin. An allowance of 185,500 yen (in FY 1999) will be given to each grantee during the term of scholarship with the understanding that the scholarship will be suspended in the case of a long absence from the university.
