USE OF THE VETO

General Assembly: 26th plenary meeting, 81st session
Debate on the item- Use of the veto – Item 62
Statement by the Micronesia Delegation

October 26, 2026

Mr. President, I am pleased to speak on behalf of my country, Micronesia, on this important issue of the Use of the Veto.

Micronesia recognizes the veto as a Charter-based responsibility entrusted to the permanent members of the Security Council. We encourage its exercise with prudence, restraint, and a steadfast commitment to the maintenance of international peace and security.

Micronesia therefore supports efforts to enhance transparency and accountability when the veto is exercised, including opportunities for the General Assembly to discuss the circumstances surrounding its use. Such discussions can strengthen understanding among Member States and contribute to greater confidence in the work of the Council.

For small island developing States such as my own, a rules-based international order and an effective Security Council are essential. The credibility of the Council depends not only on its ability to act, but also on its ability to explain its actions to the wider membership.

While views differ on proposals concerning the future of the veto, we believe that any reform must preserve the effectiveness of the Security Council while strengthening its legitimacy and responsiveness to the concerns of the broader membership.

Micronesia therefore encourages continued dialogue aimed at fostering greater transparency, accountability, and responsible use of all powers entrusted under the Charter, including the veto.

Thank you.
