WERI Annual Conference Slated for December 04, 1997
PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Information Service): November 28,
1997 – The Water and Energy Research Institute (WERI) of the
Western Pacific at the University of Guam and the FSM Advisory
Council meeting will be held on December 4, 1997, at the Central
Facility Conference Room at the FSM Capital in Palikir, Pohnpei,
according to Robert Hadley, FSM Coordinator for WERI.
Tentative list of conference participants include State
Representatives to the WERI Advisory Council in the persons of the
State Disaster Officers, the FSM National Planner, Environmental
Health, FSM Climate Change Officer, Representative of the FSM
Environmental Management and Sustainable Development Council, FSM
Disaster Office Representative, a representative of the FSM Congress
and others.
The agenda for the Conference include the opening at 9 a.m., with
the welcoming and introduction of participants; an overview of the
objectives and background; progress reports on FSM Projects;
presentations by representatives on research and training needs; and
discussions and prioritization of research and training for next
year.
During the afternoon beginning at 2 p.m., discussions on the State
and National Government draught response programs with specific focus
on updated predictions on rainfall for the summer of 1997 by members
of the ENSO application team; presentation by state representatives
on their state’s draught response; presentation by National
Government representatives on the National Government’s response to
the draught; a draught impact assessment study and culminating with a
group discussion on common problems and solutions.
At 9 a.m. on Friday, December 5, 1997, will be a continuation of
group discussions on draught response.
