FSM Disaster Officials Attend FEMA Conference in US

PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Information Service): October 7, 1997
– FSM President Jacob Nena’s Special Assistant Josaiah Waguk and FSM
Disaster office’s secretary Oleen Poll attended a three-day
Mitigation Assistance Workshop from September 16th to the 18, 1997.

The first day was devoted to discussions on strategic Plans,
Mitigation Planning, and Mitigation councils. The second day was
focused on Hazard Mitigation and Risk Assessment, and the third day’s
discussions was on pre-disaster and post-disaster Mitigation
opportunities including education, outreach and training.

Waguk said the workshop was informative and useful. Disasters such
as typhoons are becoming common in the FSM. Therefore, there is a
great need for the governments and peoples to have plans developed
when such disaster strikes. In order to minimize the adverse effects
of such events.

FSM National and State Governments must have in place its own
Action Plans to put into Action during disaster.

Waguk and Poll took advantage of their trip to visit and meet FEMA
officials in Region IX and clarified certain administrative details
including the outstanding FEMA projects in the FSM.

Participants included those from the states of California,
Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands,
Republic of Marshall Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Federated
States of Micronesia.
