FSM Vice President Calls for Appointment of Congress
Representative on Joint Committee on Negotiation

PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Information Service): June 27, 1997
On June 25, 1997, Vice President Leo A. Falcam wrote Congress Speaker
Jack Fritz, urging for an early appointment of the representatives of
the four state Congressional delegations on the newly created Joint
Committee on Economic Negotiation (JCN).

Falcam also informed Fritz that he has asked the states to submit
to him by the middle of July 1997 names of their representatives, one
from each state, so the JCN can be organized and functioning as soon
as possible.

The JCN is responsible for preparatory work on the renegotiations
between the FSM and the United States Government.

Funding of 4200,00, for the operation of JCN was approved as part
of the budget supplemental for Fiscal Year 1997, Public Law No 10-4.

In May this year a FSM Delegation headed by then Secretary of
External Affairs, Asterio Takesy, traveled to Washington, D.C, and
then to Tokyo, Japan, to hold Compact-related roundtable discussions.
