June 9, 2025 (New York, FSMUN) – With the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) opening in Nice, France, Micronesia is honored to serve as one of its Vice Presidents. Micronesia’s election to represent the Asia-Pacific region underscores its leadership on Ocean governance and its unwavering commitment to sustainable marine stewardship.
As a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), Micronesia has long been at the forefront of advocacy for ocean conservation, climate resilience, and the responsible management of marine resources. Through its participation in UNOC3, Micronesia continues to advocate for the priorities of SIDS, amplifying the voices of vulnerable island nations and coastal communities and reinforcing the critical need for equitable ocean financing and policy solutions.
President Wesley W. Simina, heading the Micronesian delegation to UNOC3, expressed gratitude for this recognition, stating, “Our Ocean is the lifeblood of our communities, our economies, and our cultures. Micronesia’s role at UNOC3 reflects our dedication to safeguarding marine ecosystems and ensuring that ocean governance is fair, inclusive, and responsive to the unique challenges faced by island nations.”

On Thursday at the seventh plenary meeting of UNOC3, Secretary Elina Akinaga of Micronesia’s Department of Resources and Development presided over the session.
