PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Information Service): September 13,
1997 – FSM President Jacob Nena, on October 3, 1997, informed
Congress Speaker Jack Fritz that the FSM will host the South Pacific
Forum which the FSM hosted in 1991.
Nena asked for the Congress’ support as it did in 1991 when the
FSM last hosted the Forum.
In seeking the views of Congress, Nena stated that the period
between latter part of July and early September seems to be the most
convenient to the Forum members.
For the FSM, a later date would allow time for completion of the
Multi-purpose Facility at the COM-FSM, and also for the hotels and
relevant businesses who may wish to expand or renovate for the event.
President Nena stated he will establish a committee to begin
planning and coordinating all necessary preparations. He also said he
would welcome any suggestions on the committee or the Forum itself.
The President concluded by thanking Speaker Fritz and stated that
he looks forward to working with Congress to make a memorable and
successful Forum Meeting.
