Nena Transmits JCN Supplemental Request to Congress

PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM INFORMATION SERVICE): February 18, 1998 – President Jacob Nena, on
February 9th, submitted to Congress for consideration a supplemental request for the Joint
Committee on Negotiation (JCN) with the United States Government.

JCN Chairman, Petrus Tun of Yap, was member of the Joint Committee on
Compact Negotiations that negotiated the existing 15-year compact of Free Association
between FSM and the United States and was FSM Vice President when the FSM Government and
its people ratified the document.

President Nena urged Congress to approve the request saying that JCN is
conducting research essential to the FSM’s preparation for the final review of the
FSM-U.S. Compact relationship.

In submitting the supplemental request, Nena noted that the Executive
Branch of the National Government is undergoing downsize readjustment and therefore is
extremely watchful for uncontrolled expenditures.

Nena stated that the JCN Secretariat is standing ready to give any
detail of the request if needed.
