PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Information Service): November 7,
1997 – Patricia Wright and Susan Sygall, two knowledgeable and
influential special education and physical disability trainers, will
be visiting Pohnpei from November 19 to 24th and will conduct
training for consumers both adults and high school youths with
disabilities, and their families on November 20 and November 21st,
according to Makir Keller, FSM Special Education Program Coordinator.
The two-day training will be very interactive and suitable to the
audience and its needs and interests. Some topics that will be
addressed are: The Americans with Disabilities Act and its
implications for their community, policy and technical assistance and
legislation development; organizing community on disability issues
for parents and consumers; possible topics for the Guam Conference;
developing a plan of action for initiating consumer participation and
activism; role of recreation and sports in leadership training;
opportunities for leadership training; and issues focused on
self-esteem and relationships, employment, women and girls with
disabilities, and other issues as needed.
Following their visit, Sygall and Wright hope to bring up their
meeting results at a conference being planned to be held on Guam in
the near future.
