Mr. Jeem Lippwe
Deputy Permanent Representative of the
Federated States of Micronesia to the UN
Before 62nd United Nations General Assembly
on the Organization of work, adoption of the agenda and allocation of items: first report of the General Committee
New York, 21 September 2007
Mr. President,
As it is the first time my delegation addresses the General Assembly under your leadership, may I take this opportunity to offer our congratulations to you.
Mr. President,
Again, we are faced with the discussion of whether Taiwan should be accorded membership in the United Nations. The rules of the Organization clearly state that only sovereign states can become members. Taiwan, however, is not a sovereign state, it is a region of China and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate representative of China in the United Nations.
The debate on this issue was settled once and for all by GA Resolution 2758 of 1971.
Thank you, Mr. President.
