General Debate

Madame Chair, Distinguished Delegates,

I am honored to represent my country Micronesia and address this 58th session of the Commission on Population and Development with the theme of “Ensuring Healthy Lives and Promoting Well Being for all at all Ages”.

As a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), Micronesia faces unique challenges and opportunities in addressing population and development issues. Our island nation is deeply committed to ensuring that our policies and programs reflect the principles of inclusivity, sustainability, and resilience.

Micronesia recognizes the critical importance of integrating population dynamics into sustainable development strategies. Our efforts are guided by the understanding that the well-being of our people is intrinsically linked to the health of our environment. As stewards of vast ocean territories, we emphasize the need for global cooperation to address the impacts of climate change and sea-level rise, which disproportionately affect our island nation and the health and lives of our population.

We reaffirm our commitment to promoting gender equality, empowering women and girls, and ensuring access to quality education and healthcare for all.  We recognize that promoting well-being requires a holistic approach, integrating health, education, and environmental sustainability.  Micronesia has prioritized initiatives that address non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, and mental health, while also strengthening our healthcare infrastructure to meet the needs of our diverse and disperse population.  These are not only fundamental human rights but also essential pillars for achieving sustainable development.

Micronesia underscores the importance of engaging youth, women and Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in decision-making processes.  Their voices and perspectives are invaluable in shaping policies that are both culturally relevant and forward-looking.

Micronesia also underscores the importance of international cooperation and partnerships in addressing global health challenges. We call upon the international community to support SIDS in building capacity, mobilizing resources, and implementing innovative solutions to ensure healthy lives and well-being for all. Together, we can uphold the shared visions of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensure that no one is left behind.

Thank you.
