National Export Strategy Formulation

Palikir, Pohnpei (FSM Information Services): September 11, 2012 – The FSM Department of Resources and Development (R&D) has contracted the services of Mr. Graham K. Poon, a consultant from Australia specialized in export strategy formulation. Mr. Poon will be assisting the FSM to undertake the development of a comprehensive national export strategy with the ultimate objective of promoting exports of products, contributing to the reduction of trade deficits, providing a means of income generation, and reducing poverty in the FSM. It is anticipated that completion of the proposed project will lead to the following:

  • Existing export development strategies reviewed;
  • National and state stakeholders consulted;
  • Public awareness raised;
  • Comprehensive national export strategy developed;
  • Implementation plan developed;
  • National Export strategy adopted by the national Trade and Facilitation Committee; and,
  • Export Strategy implemented in all States with the assistance and support from Compact Private Sector Grants and other funding sources.

Mr. Poon will be accompanied by the Export Strategy Specialist, Mr. Adelman Joseph, and Acting Assistant Secretary for Trade and Investment, Ms. Camille Movick-Inatio, to undertake consultations with all stakeholders from all the FSM States and the National Government. These consultations will be conducted in the form of a one day workshop and one-on-one consultations during the following dates:

Yap:

  • Workshop: September 5
  • Individual consultations: September 6-8

Chuuk

  • Workshop: September 10
  • § Individual Consultations: September 11-13

Kosrae

  • Workshop: September 17
  • Individual Consultations: September 15

Pohnpei

  • Workshop: September 19
  • Individual Consultations: September 20

National Government:

  • Workshop: September 21
  • Individual Consultations: September 24

All private sector and government agency representatives are encouraged to attend these workshops and/or consultations to ensure that a comprehensive strategy fully reflecting stakeholder views is developed.
