Asterio Takesy From FSM Named Head Of SPREPAPIA, Samoa (PINA Nius Online): August 11, 2002 – Prominent Federated States of Micronesia public servant Asterio Takesy has been named the new director of the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP). Mr. Takesy will succeed Cook Islander Tamari’i Tutangata, who in January completes his maximum second term at the Apia-based agency. SPREP is an inter-governmental organization set up to look after the region’s environment. Its members are 22 Pacific islands countries and territories, plus Australia, France, New Zealand and the United States of America. The SPREP news release said: “He has gained a reputation as a skilled and experienced negotiator with governments, bilateral and multilateral donors, and as developer of environmental policy and strategies.” Mr. Tutangata was quoted as saying: “Mr. Takesy is well known in the region for his skills and leadership. These qualities will contribute greatly to the overall enhancement of the organization and its objectives.” Mr. Takesy is the first Micronesian to hold the position.
