Asterio Takesy From FSM Named Head Of SPREP

APIA, Samoa (PINA Nius Online): August 11, 2002 – Prominent Federated States of Micronesia public servant Asterio Takesy has been named the new director of the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).

Mr. Takesy will succeed Cook Islander Tamari’i Tutangata, who in January completes his maximum second term at the Apia-based agency.

SPREP is an inter-governmental organization set up to look after the region’s environment. Its members are 22 Pacific islands countries and territories, plus Australia, France, New Zealand and the United States of America.

A SPREP news release said Mr Takesy brings to the position a background that includes:

• studies in marine biology, political science and public administration;

• more than three decades of public service, including being secretary to the Minister of Resource and Development, head of the foreign affairs department and chief foreign policy adviser to the president;

• his current work as executive director of the Federated States of Micronesia’s joint committee on Compact of Free Association negotiations with the United States.

The SPREP news release said: “He has gained a reputation as a skilled and experienced negotiator with governments, bilateral and multilateral donors, and as developer of environmental policy and strategies.”

Mr. Tutangata was quoted as saying: “Mr. Takesy is well known in the region for his skills and leadership. These qualities will contribute greatly to the overall enhancement of the organization and its objectives.”

Mr. Takesy is the first Micronesian to hold the position.
