FSM Congress News, October 21, 2003

PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Congress): October 21, 2003
Congress unanimously adopted a resolution congratulating
the nation and the people of the People’s Republic of China on the
successful completion of their historic first manned space flight.

The resolution stated in part that “China’s successful mission marks an
historic milestone in the peaceful exploration of space for the benefit of
all mankind.”

The spacecraft blasted into space on October 15, 2003 with “taikonaut” Yang
Liwei who single handedly manned the craft and orbited the earth 14 times in
21 hours. The mission ranked China in number 3 after Russia and United States.

The other resolution that was adopted by Congress today, October 21,
authorizes the president to resubmit the nominations of Mr. Mathew Y.
Chigityal, Mr. Alexander R. Narruhn and Dr. Alexander Panuelo to serve as
members of the FSM Banking Board.

Congress deferred action on three bills that were up for 2nd and Final
Reading. This is the second time Congress deferred its action on these same
bills. The bills pertain to the law on immigration moratorium, limiting the
term of ambassadors to the term of the president and to change the use of
certain funds for the State of Chuuk. The later bill was deferred to
indefinite time.

Congress recessed at 12:00 noon and will reconvene tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.
