FSM Department of Health and Social Affairs receives US Grant on Substance Abuse and Mental Health

Palikir, Pohnpei (FSM Information Services): July 22, 2009 – The FSM Department of Health and Social Affairs (DHSA) has been awarded $6,383,030.00 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) for five years to implement the Strategic Prevention Framework – State Incentive Grant (SPF-SIG Micronesia) in the Federated States of Micronesia. The grant will provide the much needed resources for the Department and its partners such as the College of Micronesia-FSM (COM-FSM), Pima Prevention Partnership, the State Departments of Health Mental Health Programs, coalitions, and NGOs to implement the SPF-SIG as proposed by the Department.

The grant will also strengthen COM-FSM’s newly approved Public Health Training Program as the academic training arm of the college to meet its goal of developing local capacity in the FSM in public health and in the field of prevention.

The DHSA is appreciative to the US DHHS SAMHSA for the funding and acknowledged the extra work from the staff of the Department and the partners involved in the preparation of the proposal.
