The FSM Government signs the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants

PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Information Service): August 24, 2001 – The Honorable Masao Nakayama, FSM Permanent Representative to the United Nations signed the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants at the U.N. Headquarters on 31 July 2001, making the FSM Government the 96^th signatory to the Convention.

The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants was adopted on 22nd May 2001, in Stockholm. The objective of the convention is to protect human health and the environment from persistent organic pollutants through measures which will reduce and or eliminate their emissions and discharges. The convention focuses initially on twelve chemicals: PCBs; DDT; Dioxins; Chlordane; Furans; Hexachlorobenzene; Aldrin; Mirex; Dieldrin; Toxaphene and Endrin.
