Federated States of Micronesia signs diplomatic relations with Republic of Croatia

NEW YORK, September 30, 1999 (FSM Permanent Mission to the UN)
The Governments of the Federated States of Micronesia and of
the Republic of Croatia established diplomatic relations yesterday,
September 29, 1999. At a ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of
the Republic of Croatia, H.E. Masao Nakayama, Permanent
Representative of the Federated States of Micronesia and H.E. Dr.
Ivan Šimonovi , Permanent Representative of the Republic of Croatia
signed a Joint Communique establishing relations at the Ambassadorial
level. In witness of the ceremony were Mr. Jeem S. Lippwe, Minister
of the Permanent Mission of the Federated States of Micronesia to the
United Nations and Mr. Josko Klisovic, First Secretary of the
Permanent Mission of the Republic of Croatia to the United
Nations.

In informal talks, similarities between both countries were
highlighted. While the Federated States of Micronesia is comprised of
over six hundred islands organized in four states, the Republic of
Croatia comprises of 5 provinces which include over one thousand
islands, many of which are inhabited, just of the Dalmatian
shore.

The Republic of Croatia became independent barely 5 years after
the Federated States of Micronesia and was admitted to the United
Nations in 1992, following the Federated States of Micronesia which
became a member the year before.
