FSM submits Continental Shelf for Eurapik RiseNew York (FSM Permanent Mission to the United Nations): August 30, 2013 – New York – On August 30, 2013, the Permanent Mission of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) to the United Nations in New York, on behalf of the Government of the Federated States of Micronesia, submitted to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) its information on the limit of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles from the baseline from which the breath of the territorial sea is measured in respect to the Eauripik Rise, in accordance with Article 76, paragraph 8 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The Eauripik Rise submission is the second submission by the Federated States of Micronesia to the Commission. On May 5, 2009, the FSM along with the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea jointly submitted to the Commission their submission in respect to the Ontong Java Plateau. Upon its submission on the Eauripik Rise the Permanent Mission was advised that a communication would be circulated to all Member States of the United Nations, including State Parties of the Convention in accordance with the Commission’s Rules of Procedure. The communication is necessary in order to publicize the executive summary of the FSM submission, including all charts and coordinates contained in the summary provided by the FSM Government. It is envisioned that consideration of the FSM submission will be included in the provisional agenda of the thirty-fourth session of the Commission which will be held in New York from January to March 2014. During the upcoming 2014 session, the FSM Government may decide to make a formal presentation before the Commission, or at a later date. The National Oceanic Resource Management Authority (NORMA) at the FSM National Government is tasked by the President as the lead agency in the preparation of the Government submissions.
