Informal meeting of the GA plenary to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the signing of the Charter of the United Nations
Statement by H.E. Jeem S. Lippwe (Permanent Representative)
New York, 26 June 2025
Mr. President,
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Charter, Micronesia reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the values of peace, human rights and sustainable development that the UN has championed since its founding.
My country emerged from the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI), a UN trusteeship, which has led to the building of our independence.
Micronesia is a small island nation, but our commitment to multilateralism is mighty. For us, the ideals of the UN are not abstract; they are the foundation upon which our independence, identity, and hopes were built. We are thankful that our commitment to the UN has been matched by the establishment of a Multi-Country Office in the North Pacific.
Today, that hope is being tested. The Climate crisis is imminent, a daily threat to our shores, homes, and way of life. Like our sister states of the Pacific SIDS, we bring to this Assembly the voice of our people whose livelihoods are imperiled by the rising seas and intensifying natural disasters. For us, climate change is not a theoretical challenge; it is a reality. It demands action, rooted not just in science and policy, but in justice, equity, and solidarity. Our collective voices as Small Island Developing States are not warnings; they are the blueprints for our survival.
Let us not mark this anniversary with words alone, but with renewed resolve, to listen to the most vulnerable, to act with courage, and to honor the Charter by living up to its promise.
Micronesia walks forward with faith in this institution and the collective power of nations united.
I thank you.
