President Mori Declared July 12 as Law Day

Palikir, Pohnpei (FSM Information Service): June 12, 2008 – On May 22, 2008, President Manny Mori signed a Presidential Declaration declaring July 12, 2008 as Law Day in the Federated States of Micronesia

The Declaration reads:

Micronesian Law Day
July 12, 2008

WHEREAS, the Congress of Micronesia was convened as the first indigenous law making body for its people, the people of Micronesia region, on July 12, 1965; and

WHEREAS, the first Micronesian Constitutional Convention was convened on July 12, 1975; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia approved the FSM Constitution thereby giving birth to the new nation on July 12, 1978; and

WHEREAS, in observance of the significant legal and national events that have occurred in the history of this Nation on the 12th of July, the Supreme Court of the Federated States of Micronesia commemorates this special day as one in which high school students throughout the Nation are called upon to engage public debate over issues of legal and national significance; and

WHEREAS, the Supreme Court of the Federated States of Micronesia will host the winners of the debates from each State to compete at the National Law Day debate on July 11, 2008 in Tofol, State of Kosrae;

NOW THEREFORE, in recognition of the significant events that have occurred in the history of this country on the 12th day of July, I, Manny Mori, President of the Federated States of Micronesia, a nation founded on the principles of democracy, do hereby proclaim July 12, 2008, as “Law Day” in the Federated States of Micronesia. Because that date falls on a Saturday, Law Day shall be celebrated on Friday, July 11, 2008. I urge all citizens and residents, governments and private agencies and organizations in this country to commemorate this day in ways to promote and advocate respect for justice, rule of law and good governance.
