Six FSM High School Students Selected for 1997 DOI Junior Statesmen Summer School

FSM President Jacob Nena, on May 22, informed the four State Governor
that six students from the FSM have been accepted and were given
scholarships from the Department of Interior Junior Statesmen Summer
Program to attend the one month summer session at selected United
States mainland Universities.

The recipients are the following: from the State of Pohnpei are
Dahlia Aldover Johnson from the Calvery Christian Academy who will
attend summer session at Yale University, and Fred Olter from Pohnpei
Agriculture and Trade School who will attend summer sessions at
Northwestern University.

From the State of Chuuk are Curtis P. Graham and Joanne Nakamura
from Xavier High School. They will attend summer sessions at
Stanford University like the two selected from Kosrae and Yap States.

From Kosrae High School is Virginia K. Olter and Yap High School
is Christina G.K. Filmed. These six students are on scholarships and
will not be required to pay anything.

There are others who have been accepted to attend the program but
have to find their own financial supports.

Department of Interior Junior Statesmen Summer School is a program
which grants full scholarships to selected High School students to
attend summer sessions at prestigious universities in the United
States.

Karen Pressor, Director of the Program, visited the FSM during the
month of March this year. She met with education officials and high
school students, explained the program and to recruit students for
the 1997 summer program.

After her return home, the Foundation selected the above named
students, who are scheduled to leave their home states at the end of
June and return at the end of July, according to Yasko Mendiola at
the FSM Department of Education.

Mendioa stated further that FSM high school students will be given
opportunities to apply for 1998 DOI Junior Statesmen Summer School
Program.

President Nena requested in his letter that each State Governor
relay his congratulations to the student and their parents as well as
the school they attend.
