July 7, 2025 (New York, FSMUN) – Serving in the capacity of Vice-President of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, Permanent Representative Jeem Lippwe of Micronesia presided over the UNGA 83rd plenary meeting to discuss the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan. In its debate on the item, the Assembly was guided by the Secretary-General’s latest report and a draft resolution aimed at reaffirming international support for the Afghan people.

In his report (A/79/947), the Secretary-General highlighted the following key points: the Humanitarian Crisis: over 22 million Afghans remain in need of assistance, with only 22% of the 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan funded; Women’s Rights: with the continued exclusion of women and girls from education and employment, with the UNSG calling it a violation of international obligations; the Security Concerns: The report highlighted that ISIL-K attacks have increased, throughout the Taliban maintain territorial control. The report also notes a lack of progress on inclusive governance and accountability, and on UN Operations: The de facto authorities have imposed severe restrictions on Afghan women working for the UN, directly impacting humanitarian operations.
