Preparatory meeting of the 2026 United Nations Water Conference to Accelerate the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6

Statement by the Micronesian delegation

New York, 9 July 2025

Mr. President,

Excellencies,

Distinguished representatives,

As we convene today to hold this preparatory meeting for the 2026 Water Conference, we face one of the most formidable challenges of our era: the pressing issue of water security in the face of climate change. Nations like mine, in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, find our water resources threatened.

We are on the front lines of an existential crisis exacerbated by rising sea levels, increasingly severe weather events, and extended periods of drought. Our communities depend largely on rainwater and vulnerable aquifers. We have witnessed the dire consequences of water scarcity and contamination, making it clear that we can no longer remain mere observers in the discussions that shape our future; we must assert ourselves as proactive participants, championing our needs, and the needs of other vulnerable nations.

In light of these challenges, Micronesia reiterates the urgent call for heightened international collaboration. Water is the responsibility of humanity. It demands a concerted global response. We must prioritize the implementation of sustainable water management practices that will bolster our resilience against the adverse effects of climate change. It is imperative that the conversation encompasses funding for innovative solutions, capacity-building initiatives, and the transfer of technology that empowers us to confront these challenges head-on.

Access to clean and safe water is a fundamental right. Clean water should not be a privilege available only to a select few; rather, it must be a universal entitlement extended to all individuals, regardless of location. It is critical to ensure that the perspectives of Small Island Developing States are not only acknowledged but amplified in these crucial dialogues.

Together, let us build partnerships that transcend geographical limitations, fostering the exchange of knowledge, resources, and innovative solutions. Let us join forces to secure a sustainable water future – not just for the people of Micronesia, but for every community grappling with the daunting challenges we face today.

Thank you.
