FSM, RMI & ROP Approves Extended COM TreatyPalikir, POHNPEI (FSM Information Services): March 24, 2006 – The Governments of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Republic of Palau has approved the extension of the amended treaty regarding the College of Micronesia On March 20, 2006, President Joseph J. Urusemal formally signed an executive order for the extension of the Amended Treaty among the Governments of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia with regards to the College of Micronesia with full support from the Board of Regents of the College testifies through its Resolution No. 05-01. The treaty extension was discussed among the Presidents of the three FAS entities in the last Micronesian President’s Summit held in the Republic of Palau in January 2005, whereby consensus was rendered to extend the Treaty to September 30, 2009. In the past years, the Treaty has been extended on various occasion with the primary reason of providing ample time for the three Governments to conclude its respective Compact renegotiation with the Government of the United States of America. The recent extension date of September 30, 2009 was agreed as it coincides with Palau’s last year of its current Compact Treaty with the United States of America. The Republic of the Marshall Islands formalized its extension Treaty on May 11, 2005 through Nitijela Resolution No. 35ND2 and the Republic of Palau on January 18, 2006 through Olbiil Era Kelulau Resolution No. 7-2SDI.
