One World One Family One Future
Shaping a Sustainable and Inclusive future through South-South Cooperation
Statement delivered by Deputy Permanent Representative Universe Y. Lawrence
New York, 7 November 2024
Distinguished Delegates, and Esteemed Colleagues,
For Small Island developing states, like Micronesia, we thank you for this opportunity to demonstrate how South-South Cooperation can be a path to overcome common challenges by joining efforts, sharing knowledge, and learning from each other.
It is an honor for Micronesia to be represented at this esteemed gathering and share insights on the transformative potential of South-South and Triangular cooperation in achieving sustainable development. In today’s interconnected world, the collaborative efforts of developing countries hold immense promise for addressing our most pressing challenges, and accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). South-South cooperation is more than a mechanism; it is a testament to the solidarity and shared aspirations of the Global South. By pooling our collective knowledge, skills, and resources, we can unlock innovative solutions tailored to our unique contexts.
Triangular cooperation further enriches this process, bringing together diverse partners to leverage their strengths and achieve common goals. One of the key benefits of South-South and Triangular cooperation is the exchange of best practices. Through these partnerships, we have witnessed remarkable success stories that demonstrate the power of peer learning and mutual support. From climate resilience initiatives in island states to health and education programs in rural communities, these collaborations have yielded tangible benefits and sustainable outcomes.
For Micronesia, we have actively engaged in these cooperation frameworks, like the India -UN Development Partnership Fund, learning from our peers and contributing our experiences. Our journey underscores the importance of a supportive environment at local, regional, and global levels. Financial and technical assistance are crucial for nurturing these initiatives, enabling them to scale and make a lasting impact. Moving forward, we must continue to prioritize South-South and Triangular cooperation amongst the key strategies for sustainable development. It is imperative to create platforms for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and capacity building. By fostering an inclusive and enabling environment, we can ensure that no one is left behind.
In conclusion, let me express the sincere gratitude of my Government to the UN Office of South- South Cooperation (UNSSC) and especially to the Government of India for its spirit of South-South solidarity, particularly for SIDS, which is clearly demonstrated through the India-UN Development Partnership Fund, supporting SDG-focused initiatives on the ground. India’s financial support provided for projects in Micronesia is a concrete example of how valuable South-South Cooperation is, accelerating progress towards my country’s sustainable development.
Thank you.
